Why we fell for it

Our home,
in the middle of nowhere.

Waking up almost alone among the dunes of NamibRand. Watching the desert meet the Atlantic. Heading out early in Etosha, never knowing which animals we'd find at the next waterhole.

We travelled through Namibia with Niko and Kai in a 4×4 that carried our beds and kitchen. Between the endless roads, there were swims, naps and afternoons at camp. That rhythm was part of the journey.

This guide brings together our 21 days on the road: the stops worth making, where we slept and the decisions we'd make differently today.

Five decisions that shape the journey

Useful ideas before mapping out your route

01 / ROUTE

Don't measure Namibia in kilometres alone

A short stage on the map can take almost the whole day. In Namibia, the road surface, stops and reaching camp before dark all matter.

Next decision →
02 / ON THE ROAD

On gravel, the map can be misleading

Plan each day by time, not distance alone. Leave room for fuel stops, slower speeds and a change of plan if the road deteriorates.

Next decision →
03 / SAFARI

In Etosha, waiting is part of the safari

Driving farther does not always mean seeing more wildlife. The first and last hours of the day, and time beside a waterhole, can transform a safari.

Next decision →
04 / AS A FAMILY

Rest is part of the route too

With children, spending several nights at some bases worked well for us. Fewer camp changes left room for the pool, naps and unplanned afternoons.

Next decision →
05 / BOOKINGS

Book the difficult stays. Leave room elsewhere.

Key nights inside Etosha and near Sesriem shape the route. Booking them first lets the stages in between remain more flexible.
