Dunes, sea and a journey

Why we fell for it

One day among the dunes.
The next beside the sea.

Oman won us over with its contrasts: sand, sea, villages and the feeling of discovering a different landscape at every turn.

But it was the little things that stayed with us too: the kids playing in the dunes, nights in the tent and time together. Travelling by 4×4 was our way of bringing all those moments together.

This guide grew out of that trip: the stops we made and the details we wish we'd had before setting off.

01 / ROUTE

Ten days between the sea, dunes and mountains

We linked the coast, wadis, Wahiba Sands, Bar al Hikman, Nizwa and the mountains. The order let us change landscapes without turning every day into a race.

The car was also our home

We travelled in a Mitsubishi Pajero with a rooftop tent for four. Before setting off, we checked the equipment, insurance, roadside assistance and which tracks the rental company allowed.

03 / TERRAIN

Water, sand and remote access

In the wadis, plans depend on water levels and the group's ability. On sand, they depend on experience, tyre pressure and the rental terms.

04 / AS A FAMILY

Oman with children aged three and six

We alternated drives with water, beaches and time to play. At Wadi Shab we did not need to reach the cave; at Jebel Shams we left the exposed trail for another trip.

05 / THE PRACTICALS

January was gentle. The mountains were not.

Temperatures were pleasant on the coast, but at around 1,900 metres we found strong winds and intense cold. Flights, the 4x4 and experiences were our biggest costs.
