Seven days following winter
We drove east to Stokksnes and returned via the Golden Circle. Wind and daylight set the pace.

with two children.
We travelled the south coast by campervan with Niko and Kai. Waterfalls, black sand and glaciers changed the landscape as we headed east.
In winter, wind, road conditions and daylight shape the journey. We learned to keep a clear direction and leave the schedule open.
That experience became this guide: our real route, the decisions we made and the details we wish we had known before leaving.

We drove east to Stokksnes and returned via the Golden Circle. Wind and daylight set the pace.
Next chapter →The campervan gave us freedom to change where we slept, but each morning began by checking roads, forecasts and warnings.
Next chapter →From Vík to Jökulsárlón, the stops look close on the map. In winter, each one needs time and breathing room.
Next chapter →Short stages and flexible plans helped us enjoy the trip with the children.
Next chapter →The northern lights appeared when the skies and location aligned. We left afternoons open for the unexpected.
Back to the beginning ←Compare the three options in the guide. The map changes with the trip length and shows the main stops; it cannot replace the KMZ map or current road reports.
DAYS · RECOMMENDED ENDPOINT
A shorter trip ending at Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach. Save Stokksnes for a trip with more time.
The difference: keep one night flexible and avoid rushing to Stokksnes.
DAYS · OUR REAL JOURNEY
This is the trip we actually took: south coast to Stokksnes, returning via Geysir and Gullfoss, and finishing at Blue Lagoon.
The difference: adds Stokksnes and the Golden Circle; even so, leave some afternoons open.
DAYS · FULL ISLAND LOOP
The guide’s longer option: Snæfellsnes, Hvítserkur, Húsavík and Goðafoss before joining the south coast and returning via Geysir and Gullfoss.
The difference: is a longer suggestion, not the seven-day trip we took.
Before driving, check current roads, weather and warnings. The 7-day route is our real journey; the other two are ways to adapt it.

Our family campervan journey: stages, stops, winter decisions and what we would repeat or change.

This guide tells the story of our family campervan trip around Iceland. It will help you plan your own south coast route and understand the decisions we made on the road.
Follow our route or shorten it at Jökulsárlón. For a full island loop, the guide also explains how to extend it through the west and north.
